Project Description
GRVR is a VR experience made for the Grand Rapids Public Museum, I worked on a part of it during my Junior Project class.
It features an interactive scene of old downtown Grand Rapids, as well as a scene showcasing what an old Anishinabe tribe village would look like before Grand Rapids was founded.
Responsibilities
During this project, I was a part of the User Interface / User Experience team. Our goal was to develop a cohesive UI with a style guide that can be used by future developers on the project, as well as improve the user experience to allow all sorts of people to experience this project.
Here are the key things I worked on and how they improved the experience of the project:
- Player Movement- I added teleportation, stick movement, and stick rotation to give users as many options as possible to help reduce sickness / motion
- Object Interaction- I added an option for players to grab interactive objects from distance using a laser to improve the experience for users, letting them rely less on movement in physical space and being close to the object. I also improved the functionality of how the VR hand interacted with the objects.
- UI Functionality- I created a simple scene select that sticks to the users HUD when opened, preventing users from losing the menu and sickness. I also added visual guides to the object interaction and movement to allow players to easily navigate their way around the scene.
This project was documented in a process book, which you can view by clicking the button below.
